Asphalt Overlay Thickness

How Thick Should An Overlay Be On An Asphalt Driveway?

Asphalt Overlay Specifications

There are 2 schools of thought on how thick an overlay of an asphalt should be.

1) How can we as contractors help our customers driveway last as long as possible?

and

2) How much money can I as a contractor make overlaying this driveway to make it last long enough to outlive the warranty?

An honest and ethical contractor will tell you and have it written in their contract “1 1/2″ compacted thickness”.

A contractor only out to line their pockets will say “1 1/2” (without using the word compacted) or they will verbally tell us “1 1/2″ compacted thickness” and not put it in writing.

The absolute minimum an overlay should be 1 1/2″ compacted thickness.
